Divorces are about to surpass the number of lasting marriages in this country. To hear about a couple who has managed to stay together for over 31 years is laudable. To find a couple whose marriage has thrived for so long and yet each partner has fulfilled their own spectacular achievements is a true inspiration. Such a couple is Griff Harsh and Meg Whitman.
Griff Harsh IV
Griffith Rutherford Harsh IV was born in St. Louis in 1953, the son of the now revered neurosurgeon Griffith Rutherford Harsh III. Inspired by his father’s many accomplishments, the younger Griff determined to become a neurosurgeon as well. He graduated summa cum laude from Harvard University and continued his education as a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford.
Dr. Griff Harsh completed his residency and fellowship training in the Department of Neurosurgery and the Brain Tumor Research Center of the University of California in San Francisco.
Griff Harsh has been awarded many honors over the years, recognizing his numerous contributions to his field. He is currently a Professor of Neurosurgery at Stanford University Medical Center. He is also director of the Stanford Brain Tumor Center and an Associate Program Director of Neurosurgery Residency at Stanford.
Meg Whitman
The wife of Griff Harsh, Meg Whitman is a power in her own right. Margaret Cushing Whitman, called Meg by nearly everyone, was born on August 4, 1956 and attended Princeton University and Harvard Business School. When she first entered college, she thought she wanted to be a doctor, but was convinced differently after taking a class in advertising. With that first class, she began her journey towards a successful career in business.
Ms. Whitman served as vice president of strategic planning for the Walt Disney Company in the 1980s, and in the 90s, she held executive positions with Proctor & Gamble, Dream Works, and Hasbro.
From 1998 to 2008, Meg Whitman was president and CEO of eBay. During her time there, she helped the company grow from only 30 employees to more than 15,000 and raised the online auction’s annual revenue from $4 million to $8 billion.
Meg Whitman ran for governor of California in 2010 but lost the election to former California governor Jerry Brown.
Together, Meg Whitman and Griffith Harsh IV make up one of the most successful couples in the U.S. They have raised two sons, Griff Harsh V and Will Harsh, and accomplished monumental achievements. Throughout it all, their marriage endures and is truly an inspiration to every young couple about to embark on the amazing journey of matrimony.
